Travel Photography for the Beginners

Every weekday you confine yourself within the confinement of your office or your shop. But during the weekends or holidays, you are unstoppable. You are restless due to the fact that you are about to travel to uncharted territories, but if that’s asking too much, some other familiar destinations too would suffice. But when you are planning such a trip, there are a few finite things that are absolutely essential. And one of them is your camera. It helps you to explore the nature and also provides you the opportunity to directly connect with it.

Yousuf Karsh once said, “Look and think before opening the shutter. The heart and mind are the true lens of the camera”. And the line is completely just. Currently most people are part of the rat race, and are secluded from enjoying the fruits of nature. So you camera or some refer to it as the third eye, open a whole new dimension for you. It helps you to peek into nature and enjoy the ever changing moods of mother earth and the living things in it. Dorothea Lange once said, ” The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera”. She also stated, ” Photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still”, which would simply fit in once you take out your DSLR in one of your road trips.

But don’t get confused. Photography is not about simply shooting everything that appears on the landscape. It surely isn’t capturing every random face and turning it into a black and white to give it perspective and edge. The sole reason photography is taken up by millions is to find the reason behind every click. It helps you to rekindle with yourself. When you take a look at your photographs and experience the same feeling and thoughts that hovered over your mind when you clicked it. Paul Stad, an American photographer once said, “Your photography is a record of your living, for anyone who really sees”. So photography is not merely using a sophisticated equipment, rather its a work of art. It is all about letting the world see through your eyes, while they share your emotions and inspirations. Famous British documentary photographer, Martin Parr once stated, “Photography is the simplest thing in the world, but it is incredibly complicated to make it really work”.

If you like traveling then you must have already seen the amazing movie “Into the Wild” which was directed by Sean Penn. It was a biographical drama about the lone traveler Christopher Mccandless, who gave away his family, riches and education to connect with the nature and survive on his own with the basic necessities on ranges of Alaska. Then there was another movie that stirred me to the core. This one was ” The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”, which basically revolves around finding a photographer, who is literally untraceable. So in a nutshell, there two movies is what traveling photography is all about.

” Photography is truth. The cinema is truth twenty-four times per second”, that what Jean-Luc Godard said, and he is absolutely right. Normally everything that we hear about, be it story about a trip or a place, is all opinionated. The story narrated to you, completely depends on the perspective of a person. So why not go ou there and find out the truth for yourself?

“There is one thing the photograph must contain, the humanity of the moment. This kind of photography is realism. But realism is not enough – there has to be vision, and the two together can make a good photograph.” – Robert Frank.

The above quote by Robert Frank sums it all. So pack you bags, learn from nature and immortalize those moments. But simply clicking and storing these pictures in your microSD card or on film is not a good practice. Wouldn’t you want to relive those moments and cherish your emotions every single day? To do so all you need is select a couple of your best and memorable pictures, edit it suitable to remove noise and print them out.

For taking a great picture, you need to have a perspective, a good knowledge of handling your camera and also should be able to edit your samples. Editing is a very important step which decides the final form of the picture. While there are a number of editing tools present which provides you easy escape by providing a number of pre-decided editable templates, you should try to refrain from this practice. By using these templates, there’s no doubt that your edit will look elegant, but what about the individuality and authenticity you photo deserves. So inspite of opting for a easy fix, try to learn the art of photo art and then gradually implement it.
